The Lollipop Generation

I’m really pumped to get to go to this because of my volunteering at the Images Festival this year. I received my very own pass today. It’s going to be an awesome 11 days.

Plan B

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I have to say, I’m really enjoying this interning gig at the Images Festival. I am working closely with huge publicity firm Planet3 Communications and I am getting a lot of hands-on experience writing press releases, contacting media, and attending events as a media and marketing rep for the festival. I really like the people I work with too.

I was chatting about “my life and what I’m going to do” with a friend today and he suggested since I am enjoying my internships so much and they are relevant, impressive ways to spend my time and gain experience for my career, maybe after my research contract ends I should just get a part time job to pay the bills (i.e. serving, coffee shop, retailing something cool) and concentrate on the internships. This way I can get the most of those experiences and it’s financially quite feasible. In the meantime I can continue my hunt for “the perfect job,” but without as much pressure as if I had no income whatsoever.

It might be something to think about.

Two Internships

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I am now the proud intern at two awesome not-for-profit organizations in my field. I sent in my cover letter, resume, interviewed, they liked me and thought I could be helpful to them, and so here I am.

The first is for Images Festival. I am not entirely sure what I will be doing there yet, but I am going to the press conference at 8 am tomorrow at the Gladstone where I will be filled in. They hinted at writing their newsletter and also working in marketing, promotions and contacting media firms. Maybe some web stuff too? We’ll see. I’m really excited about getting involved with iF. Their festival is really quality and they are very innovative and well respected by me and everybody. Also, internships are fun because they really take in your skills and what you want to develop.

My second fun internship is at Interaccess. I’m super pumped for this one too and my understanding is I will be responsible for their vlog! How fun will that be? Interacces is a really cutting-edge new media gallery that is just doing the most amazing and interesting stuff AND they are hilarious and wonderful people. Also, that is great experience for me to be responsible for an online video- conceptualizing, shooting, editing, etc. I’m finding out more about this position later on this week or next week too.

So this is great news, trust me! I have found myself two really amazing opportunities where 1) they are places where I want to be in terms of what they are doing, 2) I will gain unique experience that will help in the future, and 3) meet lots of people who I can learn from and possibly start making connections to help find that all important career.
